This article covers the "file count limit exceeded" message that is thrown in Chat when too many files have been uploaded or generated in a single Chat.
Why This Happens
There is a limit of 20 total files per chat which includes both uploaded and generated files. Each chat keeps the files and generated outputs it has accumulated. As you iterate and generate new versions, older files and revisions remain attached and continue to count toward the limit for that chat. Once the limit is reached, new files or generations may be blocked until you reduce the number of attached files.
How to reduce the file count
Remove older revisions and files you no longer need from the chat
Download any output you want to keep before removing it, so you retain a copy outside the chat
Select the "+" icon in Chat to see all of your uploaded and generated files
Select the three dots next to a file and select "Delete" to remove it
How to avoid hitting the limit
Use the below to help avoid hitting the file limit:
Start a new chat for a distinct task rather than continuing to iterate in one long-running session
Download finished outputs and remove them from the working session once they are complete
Avoid re-uploading the same source files multiple times into the same session
When generating many versions of a document, clear earlier versions you no longer need as you go.
When to contact support
If you have removed older files and revisions and still cannot add or generate files, contact support at [email protected]. Include the chat name and URL, roughly how many files are attached, and the exact message you see so we can review the limit that applies to your session.
